Use This Travel “Hack” To Bypass Waiting In Long Lines At the Airport
Passengers have had to navigate through outlandish wait times caused by a number of security checkpoints and screening lines in order to gain access to travel airlines.
Finding your way through airport security can be a huge pain – even taking the sheen off your whole trip.
Well, you do not have to experience these bottlenecks every time you want to fly and yes, there is an easier way. But how can you skip the long screening lines and get through the airport security checkpoints faster?
Use This Travel “Hack” to Bypass Waiting In Long Lines At the Airport – TSA PreCheck.
In 2011 the Transportation Security and Administration introduced a program called TSA PreCheck, which was only offered to frequent flyers.
In 2013 TSA opened up TSA PreCheck to everyone. The incentive is to bypass those long screening lines for the special PreCheck line.
Apply for TSA PreCheck
TSA PreCheck is a savvy tool for the frequent flyer. The TSA PreCheck program allows air travelers considered low risk by the Transport Security Administration (TSA) to go through expedited security checks and relaxed screening measures at certain airports (with 200 airports and 37 airlines participating) in the U.S.
When you apply for TSA PreCheck, TSA will conduct a federal background on you. Your name will be checked against the Terror Watch List.
The CDC- Centers For Disease and Control and Prevention for individuals who are not allowed to travel due to health concerns.
If you are a qualified TSA PreCheck traveler, you do not have to:
- Take off your shoes
- Take off your belt
- Take off your light jacket
- Take out your laptop
- You do not have to remove 3-1-1 compliant liquids from your bag.
Eligibility
It is likely that you are eligible to enroll for the TSA PreCheck program since it is open to U.S. citizens of any age. In fact, foreigners who meet specific citizenship and residency requirements may also be eligible to apply for the program – and say goodbye to the long airport screening lines.
TSA mission is to protect the nations transportation system to ensure freedom of movement.
Sign Up for the Global Entry Program
Global Entry is very similar to the TSA PreCheck program. However, TSA PreCheck only eases security screening for U.S. domestic travelers. On the other hand, Global Entry is a program designed to enable international travelers to navigate their way through those long, tiring lines at the airport.
Organized by the U.S. Custom and Border Protection, the Global Entry program makes for expedited security clearance for low-risk travelers upon arrival into the U.S.
How To Bypass Long Screening Lines at The Airport
It is designed to ensure qualified travelers avoid border control checkpoints and its long lines – and instead proceed to a Global Entry kiosk where they are cleared after a few questions, scanned fingerprints, and Global Entry receipt is checked.
Interestingly, the Global Entry program is still available even at times when the Customs and Immigration are closed.
Upon approval of your TSA PreCheck or Global Entry program application, you would be issued a Known Traveler Number (KTN).
The KTN is a number issued by the TSA indicating that the holder of the number has passed through background checks and is deemed eligible for expedited security screening process.
Enrollment for either of the PreCheck or Global Entry programs is the easiest way to get your KTN. You would be issued a KTN if your application is approved.
While the KTN from the PreCheck program is linked only to the personal information you provided during your application, the KTN from the Global Entry program is linked to your passport information.
If your KTN was issued through the PreCheck program, it is important that you add it to each reservation every time you book a flight on a TSA PreCheck compliant airline.
If you received your KTN through the Global Entry program, you should use every time you make a flight reservation, no matter the airline involved.
In Closing
Going to the airport doesn’t have to be a hassle. Interestingly, the Department of Homeland Security is now considering a merger of the TSA PreCheck and the U.S. Custom and Border Protection’s Global Entry programs.
With about 12 million members on both programs, a merger will make for unified biometrics and reduce membership costs in the long run. No, airport security and screening doesn’t have to be all doom and gloom.
TSA process and procedures are to protect the nation from any threatening and/or any suspicious activities at the airports, train stations, bus stops and ports.
Passenger screening at the airport is crucial in getting you safely to your destination. TSA screenings are to prevent items and other threats to transportation security from entering the area of the airport.
