Airline Ticket – How to Get a Refund on a Non-Refundable Airline Ticket

In this episode, I’ll share with you, How To Get A Refund on a Non-Refundable Airline Ticket.

And yes, it is possible.

There are ways of avoiding these fees and get a full refund on your non-refundable airline ticket.

With up to 80% discount off flexible, refundable tickets; non-refundable airline tickets are one of the cheapest ways to travel.

However, the non-refund policy can be a complete turn-off.

You can’t get a refund if you miss your flight due to unforeseen circumstances, and rescheduling attracts an extra cost.

Nevertheless, unknown to most travelers, there are some leeways which allow you to get a refund on tickets you bought under the “non-refundable” clause.

Ways to Get Refunds on Non-Refundable Airline Tickets

Although most airlines will tell you that they can’t refund non-refundable airline tickets when you miss your flight, the good news is that you can get a refund.

Depending on the situation at the time, you can get a refund on your non-refundable ticket. Outlined below are some of these exceptions to the non-refund rule.

Cancellation Within 24 Hours of Booking

One of the ways you can get a refund on non-refundable airline tickets is to cancel within 24 hours of booking it.

In the United States, the Department of Transportation (DOT) allows you to cancel your reservation within 24 hours of booking it without paying any penalties.

Airlines have the option of either giving you a refund or holding your reservation at the required fare for 24 hours, without extra payment.

Airline Schedule Change

If you bought a non-refundable ticket from an airline, and they make significant changes to their schedule, you can request for a refund.

However, the schedule change depends on the particular airline you bought the ticket from.

For instance, American Airlines may refund you if the changes made to their schedule extends the departure time by 61 minutes and more.

United Airlines is also known to make refunds under certain conditions when they make changes to their schedule.

Flight Cancellation By Airline

When your flight gets canceled for whatever reason, most airlines will rebook you on the next available flight.

However, you can decide to decline the new itinerary and request for a refund, even if you have a non-refundable ticket.

According to the DOT, you can also get a refund of the extra charges/fees you may have paid along with your airfare, including seat assignment, bag fee, etc.

Death of Your Travel Companion

You may also be entitled to a refund on a non-refundable airline ticket if your travel companion dies before your flight.

However, before you can receive a refund, in the event of the death of your travel companion, most airlines will require you to first provide a death certificate for the deceased.

Although it is done simply out of goodwill, a good number of airlines have internal policies that refund airfares when their customer’s travel companion dies.

These are only some of the situations in which your non-refundable airline ticket can become refundable.

Several others situations which enable you to get a refund on tickets include, having jury duty, falling seriously ill, etc., and if all fails, you can initiate a credit card chargeback.

In Closing

So, if you are going to miss the flight for that non-refundable ticket you just bought, check if these exceptions apply to you and politely ask for a refund.
